The best portrait is one that surprises us. We don’t know just how we did it, and the effect is profound — the heart, there in the face. It feels as though we’d leaned in to whisper something and found we suddenly couldn’t speak. There we’d be, drowning in their face while they looked back into a circle of dark glass. It is beautiful and frightening, both at once.

Working Past Our Threshold
Live and in person at Maine Media Workshops August 4-8
In this workshop, we jump beyond our threshold on the first day. We use a series of exercises and assignments to open our vision and take us to the creative state. We work at seeing by using words, improvisation, and, of course, photography. This work is to get us to a place that we can’t get to by thinking or analysis, the place where photography and creativity take us over. It’s about working with creativity itself on the spot and heading toward a new vision…and new photographs.
